It was an automatic first down either way, which effectively ended the game at that point.

Defensive holding is probably one of the least called infractions in the game as well, which makes the fact that the ref thought it was a good time to call one, even worse.
As far as the call is concerned, late in a game, particularly a playoff or SuperBowl game, penalties typically have to be flagrant or at least glaringly clear. This was a borderline call. Accepted practice is that the officials "let them play" and let borderline calls go.
